The Arkansas
Grand Prairie Museum

by Lin Stone

This is a Fordson tractor.

Ford lovers deny it vehemently
But Henry Ford bought the company out
because his tractors couldn't cut the mustard.

After the ink was dry on the contract,
the name was changed to Ford.

This Case above was a real power horse.
The symbol of the company was an eagle perched on a world ball.
Corky Narramore of Palo Verde, AZ. got one of the last ones ever
publicly displayed by a Case Distributor.  It was made of wood.

See the holes punched into the Case's rear steel tires?
Now look at similar holes in this lugged wheel John Deere.

What on earth will they think of next?

When I was seven years old this type of tractor was still in use.
Rubber-tired wheels came out next and an old timer told me how hard it was
to turn them around on the end of the fields turn-row.
"Finally someone had the bright idea of LIFTING the equipment up,
and we never had any more trouble turning around at the field's end."

Lifting equipment up was done at first with a trip, triggered with a rope.
If the trip missed, the rope could yank you plumb out of the saddle.
Letting the implement back down to the ground was just as dangerous.
I never heard one complaint when hydraulics were invented.

On the plus side though, those steel seats that cost almost nothing
were even more comfortable than the modern seats invented
by Arizona Governor McFarland's wife.
