The Arkansas
Grand Prairie Museum

by Lin Stone

The home is not forgotten in the museum.
But let us remember that only rich women stayed at home.

For at least a great portion of the day
Girls worked in the fields right alongside the boys.
Women worked in the fields at jobs just as hot as the men could stand

Come sundown and the men fed and watered the stock,
doctored up the wounds, repaired the harness and the equipment
while women went home to prepare the meals, clean the house and haul the water.

Making pretties like these below was done during those times
when modern families lay back and let the television entertain them.

Even in the hardest of times it was self-evident that
learning to love is part of growing up.

Dolls were made to be loved.
Little girls practiced love on their dolls
so they would grow up to be the heart of the home.
Their dreams, their fantasies, were the stirrings of the soul
that nudge civilizations ever upward towards light, love and truth.
