Fall is the season to take a break from city life, suburban mania, and Saturday morning soccer practice, according to the Carlsbad Convention & Visitors Bureau. Let your wild side take charge and come to Carlsbad on San Diego's beautiful North Coast when birding is at its best.

In the fall, Mother Nature fills the sky with voluminous white clouds and the migratory birds begin long flights to winter homes. A vital sanctuary along the migratory path and a winter destination is Carlsbad's Batiquitos Lagoon, one of the few remaining tidal wetlands on the southern California coast. The lagoon is a haven for resting tired wings, food supplies and birding enthusiasts. The coastal salt marsh with tidal mudflats is a natural environment supporting birds, insects, plants, fish and mammals. Many species living on the land that surrounds the lagoon are dependent on the wetland habitat.

Some of the more frequent flyers seen at the lagoon are the pied-billed grebe, great egret, snowy egret, black-necked stilt and western sandpiper. Throughout the year at least 185 species of birds have been spotted at the lagoon. However, according to local bird expert and docent Mona Baumgartel, "unusual and out of the ordinary species are seen sporadically throughout the year." Baumgartel also commented that "the docents call Batiquitos lagoon a bird's bed & breakfast."

The Batiquitos Lagoon Nature Center is staffed with knowledgeable docents who can guide you on the trails or answer any questions about the thriving wildlife and vegetation. Each docent contributes their expertise that makes a guided tour a pleasurable learning experience or visitors may go on a self guided tour and discover the magic of the lagoon on their own.

"Any time of the year, visitors to Carlsbad can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, luxurious resorts, more than two dozen fine hotels, outstanding shopping districts, world-class sporting events, the only LEGOLAND park in the United States and more than a dozen challenging golf courses in and around the city, including The Crossings at Carlsbad, the city's newest municipal golf course," said Kurt Burkhart, executive director for the Carlsbad Convention & Visitors Bureau. Burkhart added, "the course also includes a three-mile long moderate, hiking trail which is part of the city's comprehensive trail system."

Sonoma Valley Wineries and Wines

Today's photo

Prohibition played a major role in boosting wine production in California. From 1920 to 1933, home winemaking flourished and nearly 150 million gallons of homegrown vintages flowed from the state. Today, there are over 150 wineries, with smaller family-owned wineries existing comfortably alongside larger entities to produce a unique variety of flavors and styles. (Complements of the Away Network)

California’s Napa Valley offers an old-fashioned wine tasting experience in the heart of one of the most romantic landscapes in the west. Annual events celebrating the spirit of the season include the Festival of Lights Holiday Faire and Town Lighting, and the popular Carol of the Caves—an inspiring performance of holiday music within the valley’s wine caves.  (compliments of the Away Network).

Lake Arrowhead. Lake Arrowhead has been called “California's Alps.” While the people of this community have all of Southern California's famous warmth, the mountains, the pine trees, and the climate are totally alpine. Snowy but mild winters make for some of the West Coast's best skiing. In the summer, Southern Californians escape here to swim or canoe in the lake and breathe in the mountain valley's cool, clean air.

Building on the Vision

On Thursday, February 6 of 2003, the Orange County Performing Arts Center held a groundbreaking celebration for its first new major expansion project since opening in 1986. The spectacular new landmark structure designed by internationally renowned architect Cesar Pelli will be adjacent to the existing Center and include the 2,000-seat Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and the 500-seat multi-purpose Samueli Theater.

It will cost $200 million, paid entirely through private funds, and will open in the fall of 2006. Henry Segerstrom donated $40 million of the cost in August of 2000, and this remains the single largest charitable gift in the history of Orange County. The Center also announced that it has signed a lump sum contract with a corporate guarantee with Fluor Corporation, which will serve as the construction manager. The lump-sum contract will provide a corporate guarantee that the project will be built within budget.

The groundbreaking ceremonies were open to the public, though the assembled guests also included Center donors, members of The Center's support groups, civic leaders, representatives from local arts organizations and The Center's board of directors. Guests filled The Center's current 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall to recognize the occasion and then moved outside to witness the official groundbreaking with three bulldozers turning the first soil to mark this historical occasion.

Sit Back and SMILE!  Hitting the High Road to adventure is easier these days. Just get on the web and type in your destination, and all the information you need is rolled out for you.  Well, that's the way it works at the Your Vacation World Travel Shop anyway.

It opened with introductions of major donors to the expansion's capital campaign,
a performance by Orange County's Pacific Symphony and remarks by Henry
Segerstrom, founding chairman; Paul F. Folino, current chairman of the board of
directors; Jerry E. Mandel, president of The Center; Roger T. Kirwan, vice-chair
for the capital campaign, and Carl St.Clair, music director of the Pacific Symphony.

Following the initial program, guests adjourned to the patios and balconies surrounding
the current facility to watch the actual groundbreaking directly across the street, which
included a fireworks finale.

"We call our expansion project Building on the Vision," said Center Chairman Paul F.
Folino. "Because today we're moving one step closer to fulfilling the founders' early vision
by breaking ground on two additional venues. With their completion our resident orchestra,
Pacific Symphony, will have a proper dedicated concert hall. And there will be added
benefits not just for the arts and arts audiences, but benefits to business, to tourism, to
young people, to our schools and universities, to the economy -- truly, to every aspect
of our lives."

San Francisco
As It Used To Be
.

Center President Jerry E. Mandel expanded on Folino's remarks, stating, "Our expansion is not only about building two new performance venues. It is also about being able to expand programming -- including more of the wonderful symphonies, ballets, Broadway shows, opera, jazz and special events -- and especially the diversity and programs of more specialized interest. And it's about the synergy of all the arts happening together on our expanded campus, which will be known as Segerstrom Center for The Arts."

RENEE AND HENRY SEGERSTROM CONCERT HALL

"Today is the culmination of fourteen years of planning and organizing since we first announced our intention to build a new concert hall in 1989," remarked Henry T. Segerstrom, the Center's Founder Chairman and scion of the Segerstrom family. "When it opens in the fall of 2006, this will be the finest concert hall in the world, a musical instrument of unequaled acoustical sensitivity housed in a structure of incredible grace and brilliance."

The front of the new concert hall will be a glass facade, or "curtain," that curves gracefully across the entire breadth of the hall. From outside the theater, patrons will have spectacular views into the multi-level atrium lobby that will sparkle with glass, a sweeping spiral staircase of silver and glass, a spectacular chandelier of 300 points of light and a silver leaf ceiling in which fibre optics will add texture and illumination.

The 2,000-seat Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall will be located directly off this elegant foyer. It will feature a custom-designed concert organ, dedicated chorus seating, box seating, silver-leafed adjustable acoustical canopies, adjustable reverberation chambers and a solo piano lift and orchestra pit capabilities.

SAMUELI THEATER

One of the most versatile features of the new building will be the 500-seat Samueli Theater. It has been designed to accommodate a number of uses and configurations, including traditional theater-style seating, theater- in-the-round, or club-style with cocktail tables for intimate seating clusters. The theater will be technically flexible to support recitals, musical theatre, corporate meetings and banquet functions.

In early 2001, the Samueli Foundation donated $10 million to the expansion efforts. Originally, a unifying public plaza was to be named in their honor, but the campaign steering committee has since decided that it would be more appropriate to place their name on this performance space. The Samuelis' interests in the community are diverse and reach far beyond the arts, encompassing educational institutions and community projects as well. Because many organizations beyond those strictly dedicated to the arts will benefit from the construction of this versatile facility, it seemed especially fitting that it be named the Samueli Theater.

When the Samuelis were informed of The Center's desire to make the change in designation, Henry Samueli remarked, "Susan and I do feel a sense of responsibility to give back to the community, both because Orange County has been so generous to us and because this is our home. We are very grateful to The Center for honoring us by naming the theater after us. The best that life has to offer should be available to everyone -- and our children should have access to the finest cultural and educational resources possible. We all have to contribute to making this happen, and that is why we feel very fortunate to be able to contribute to these goals."

California is so rich with sights and great places to visit that one has to plan not one but many trips there to truly take in all it has to offer. Why a visit to Los Angeles alone can fill a week and you would still leave behind so much to do and see. Here in the home of our great movie industry, the idea of hanging out near the major studios to catch a glimpse of a movie star is pretty hard to resist. And you can pass your time waiting by going to Grauman’s Chinese Theater to put your own feet in the famous imprints on the walk of fame. There you can see if your shoe size lines up with such greats as Marilyn Monroe, Marlin Brando, Dustin Hoffman or even Lassie.

While in LA don’t forget that this is the area of the country where you can check in at the original Disneyland. Yes while the Florida and other locations that have been built since then are wonderful, don’t miss the chance to sing “It’s a Small World After All” with the anamatronic figures that will delight you and your children in those historic rides in Disneyland.

Anywhere you go up and down the California coast, one thing will continue to draw your eye is the amazing California coast. The sight of those waves making huge breakers on the rocks and beaches has been the object of art for many painters over the years. If you live in a land-locked state or even if you have enjoyed the coast lines in the gulf states and the eastern seaboard, the California surf will be yet another viewpoint of the majesty of God’s creation in the oceans that grace our fair country.

It might take another whole trip to enjoy the exotic locations all around the city of San Francisco. But give it that time because this is a town you want to take in on foot or by traveling on their famous and historic street cars. For a small city, San Francisco will charm you so thoroughly that you would swear you were in one of the quant and charming villages of Europe, Spain or Greece. The sight of those breath taking hills that the residents have to drive each day will probably bring back some great movie you saw that was filmed there. And it’s easy to get goose bumps standing on the corner of Haight and Ashbury and reflect on the birth of the Hippy Movement in the early sixties right on that spot.

There is just so much to do up and down this big and diverse state that you will want to have a car at your disposal just to tour the paradise like conditions that residents enjoy there every day. A tour of the wine country in northern California is another experience that has become famous for charming visitors of all ages. You can even retrace the voyage of the characters in the movie Sideways which won an Academy Award and further added to the lore and fame of this wonderful part of California.

California may not steal your heart away from your home town and state. But one this is for sure. Your trip to California will leave you with dozens of exciting memories and it will leave you with something even more lasting. You will come home with a determination that you have to get back to California and continue to enjoy the many treats this great American state has to offer.

ADDITIONAL DESIGN FEATURES

An elegant private donor room and a public restaurant have been integrated into the front space of the new hall, and these will share the same extraordinary glass facade as the main foyer. According to Cesar Pelli, he conceived the graceful curve to be reminiscent of a stage curtain, behind which patrons are as much a part of the performance and theatre as the musicians and artists.

A full complement of large orchestra and individual performer rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, music library and full-service professional restaurant kitchens complete the facility.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TEAM

The new facility has been designed by architect Cesar Pelli with acoustics by Russell Johnson of ARTEC, which is one of the world's leading acoustical design firms. Pelli is an award-winning architect whose designs have garnered for him the American Institute of Architects' 1995 Gold Medal recognizing a lifetime of distinguished achievements. He is responsible for many of the world's most notable buildings, not the least of which is the 88-story Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- which until recently was the tallest building in the world.

In addition to his residential and municipal projects, museums and office buildings, Mr. Pelli has designed numerous performing arts and concert facilities and collaborated with Russell Johnson on previous occasions. He designed the Dwan Filharmonik Petronas, the concert hall located in the Petronas Towers, the Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami; the North Carolina Bluementhal Performing Arts Center; Cincinnati's Aronoff Center for the Art and theaters at Vassar College and the University of Minnesota.

Russell Johnson is acclaimed by top-rank musicians, music administrators and music critics as "the guru of international concert hall acoustics." His name has become an international byword for acoustics that enhance the sound of music and simultaneously help conductors and musicians achieve some of their finest performances.

His most notable achievements in recent years include the Sala Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil; the Chan Shun Concert Hall in Vancouver, British Columbia; Symphony Hall in Birmingham, England; Prudential Hall (opera house) in Newark, New Jersey; the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, and the Cultural and Congress Center in Lucerne, Switzerland. Johnson and ARTEC have also provided core input and design for new opera houses and concert halls in Miami, Kansas City, Orlando and Singapore, as well as working on concert halls for The Philadelphia Orchestra and in New York, Miami, Kansas City, Orlando, Toronto and Singapore.

As construction manager, Fluor will pre-qualify subcontractors and suppliers and manage those selected in accordance with the specifications provided by the architects and The Center. Coordination of the many companies required to construct this world-class facility is in keeping with Fluor's core competencies and values.

Based in Aliso Viejo, Calif., Fluor is a Fortune 500 company with revenues of $10 billion in fiscal year 2002. It provides services on a global basis in the fields of engineering, procurement, construction, operations, maintenance and project management.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF

THE ORANGE COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

AND THE EXPANSION PROJECT

The existing Center facility includes the 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall, an unique asymmetrical opera house-style configuration which is now used by The Center and its artistic partners, the Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, Opera Pacific and Pacific Chorale, for Broadway shows, ballet, concerts, opera and other special events.

Founders Hall, a 250-seat performance space, is the home for The Center's jazz and cabaret performers, chamber ensembles and programs presented by The Center's active education and community programs department.

Built on land donated by the Segerstrom family, the Orange County Performing Arts Center was paid for entirely by private funding. To this day, The Center continues as a private non-profit organization, and neither solicits nor accepts government funds. It welcomed the public for the first time in 1986. Since then, Segerstrom Hall and Founders Hall have become the cultural heart of the region, presenting one of the nation's finest international dance seasons, Broadway musicals, internationally acclaimed chamber ensembles and soloists, renowned jazz and cabaret artists and many of the entertainment world's leading stars in special one-night-only events.

It became clear immediately that both halls were busy with Center- presented events and performances from the Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, Opera Pacific, Pacific Chorale and other organizations from throughout Southern California. With the current facility booked for performances, rehearsals, load-ins and load-outs or maintenance nearly every day of the year, it was obvious that plans for additional venues were called for.

In 1999, a six-acre parcel of land across the street from the existing facility was deeded to The Center by the Segerstrom family in order to provide space for expansion of South Coast Repertory, The Center's new venues, and the eventual building of a visual arts campus. The entire complex will bear the name Segerstrom Center for the Arts. In 2000, Henry Segerstrom provided the $40 million lead gift to the capital campaign. The Center decided to honor Segerstrom and his late wife, Renee, by naming the concert hall after them. Completion of the new building is anticipated for the spring of 2006. Final testing and adjustments to the acoustics will proceed through the summer. Grand opening celebrations are planned for the fall of 2006 to coincide with The Center's 20th Anniversary celebrations and opening of Pacific Symphony's season.
