A few enlightened judges now put people to doing public service instead of handing them down a term in jail. Very seldom is that a good idea. The only reason inmates take up this option is so they can get back out on the street faster. They end up out there painting fire hydrants or picking up sticks and tin cans off the side of the road, or worse yet – doing slave labor for their avowed enemies, the police. Most of them follow through with listless or vicious strokes and are festering anger that they have to actually do something besides play pool or watch television. They aren’t learning a thing from the fire hydrant except that if you get caught -- the fun stops.

Hang Your Career
Up In Chains

It doesn’t have to be that way.

For example, one judge in Mena Arkansas has this disturbing habit of assigning people to learn a new skill through on the job training, like how to refinish church and court pews -- or at least absorbing tangible talents in some other fields in the same way.

Projects like this help the socially disadvantaged feel good about themselves when they are finished.

Robert Wells wants to do his part in helping the less fortunate
learn new and useful skills too.

Benches like this can last a life time. Properly treated the wood will last for centuries. Even without treatment the chains may last two or three thousand years.

He works with volunteers who are willing to learn how to pick up a new skill.  Under his tutelage the learning curve to entering a new career in artistic welding is short and sweet.

“I have taught people who have never touched a welding machine in their lives and they mastered the work quickly. Usually it takes less than one weekend for someone to pick up all the skills needed to make a table and a bench they can be proud of."

And sell?  Yes, and sell!

Like the statues of Michelangelo the artistic benches and tables they create can last far beyond a life time. Properly treated the wood will last for centuries. Even without treatment the chains may last two or three thousand years.

"After just one weekend they will know how to do the work, and when they get home they can use the cheapest welding machines on the market to do this work with."

The field is wide open.  You can make your own chain, or you can use new chain or used.  Your links can be of any size, and any shape.  They can be made from any kind of metal. Chains go into high dollar jewelry.  Once you learn this skill you can create anything from artistic mail box holders to signs with letters 50 feet high.  The only limit to the things you can make is your own imagination.

There has never been a chain that had to die. People have this idea that a chain will rust away and fall apart.  That isn't so.  The chain mail from King Arthur's day is still holding together and still effective.  When a chain begins to rust the very rust itself provides a solid protective barrier against the oxidation of the chain links locked inside that rust.

If a link in the chain ever does break, the rest of the chain can go right on being used, for decoration after work, or put together again with a new joining link.

Robert grants you his students won’t be certified welders or anything even close to that, but they will be able to do a lot of work like this that nobody else is doing, for lack of training.  Robert is ready to give anyone the training they need.  He has numerous plans and many short cuts to offer.  Just glancing around his huge shop is the start of a great learning experience.  He has tables, ladders, fountains, toys and words -- many, many words.

Chain Art
Samples

Robert used to be a trucker, but bad health brought an end to that so he took up this hobby of turning chains into furniture and other works of art.  In these days when 100% disability decrees are handed down routinely, most people who are suffering from bad health don’t take up a hobby, they take up a half reclining position in front of the television.  Their goal is to brood there for the rest of their lives.

Robert Wells didn't want to be a couch potato so he took up a hobby with a mission of helping others.  "We have 38,000 correctional facilities in the United States, and while some of them do have training programs, even the staff casually admits that 90% of the programs are failures." Robert declaims.  "Things must be done for the right reasons or it won’t do the job.  Forcing someone to work at something they hate is a total waste of time."

Robert feels that I LOVE YOU
are the three most important words in the English language.
Under his hand they are definitely the most beautiful words we've seen.

Every link you see here requires 3 inches of welding.
Under his tutelage you can whip out signs like this one in just a few days.

Robert wouldn’t want to work with someone who hasn't really volunteered.  "But if the student is ready to learn, I am ready to teach and I won't care if s/he is a HomePreneur wanting to start a unique business -- or a hardened criminal living out a life sentence in a maximum security unit."

Couch potato do-gooders always want someone else to do all the good and put up the money too, as if just thinking something should be done is work enough to exhaust them.  Robert is not like that.  He is eager to get his hands dirty in the cause of helping others to learn a new skill and prosper.  He is ready to pass on the torch to anyone ready to run.

Robert can show you how to lay out the design and build just about anything your mind can imagine.  He will gladly show you how to turn a pile of scrap chain into a piece of art that stands at attention and grabs attention anywhere you put it.

He is also big on gospel themes.  At one time his goal was to publish the entire Bible as a work of art, wrought in chain letters.

Robert certainly has the skill for producing the entire Bible in chains, but the most important part of the gospel is LOVE, and LOVE is a verb.  If you are going to practice the gospel, you have to be anxiously engaged in helping others.

Your clients could be city parks, business owners, and proud home owners.  The chains you use don't even have to be new.  Robert would never think of using new chain for his art.  The chains he gets come from the big commercial wood chipper machines.  These he can buy for $150 used and if you bought the same amount of new chains they would be $3,000.  Similar sources are available all over the country if you start looking for them.  If nothing else, go to the nearest pawn shops and ask if they have any.

Robert lives in Grannis Arkansas in the southern part of the state, on U.S Highway 71 along the way to Dallas. His mailing address is Robert Wells:  P. O. Box 191 Grannis, AR 71944  The phone number is 870 385-7279  Call any time, and if you are thinking about coming to visit for on-site training, there is a little motel down the road from Robert that charges a very small amount for weekly stays.

Gold Fever is the insane compulsion to set aside the diamonds we already have and tear off across parts unknown to reach the latest gold strike.
