Vacationers will find plenty to do while using Big Sky, Montana, as a base camp for summer activities. Include a visit to Yellowstone, our nation's oldest national park. And for immersion in scenery, a variety of eye-popping beauty is around every corner. The town sits at the base of Lone Mountain near the Gallatin River and is surrounded by the Gallatin National Forest. This is an area filled with spectacular hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, fishing and golf. All this, and it is only a few miles from Yellowstone National Park, making Big Sky, Montana, an ideal summer vacation spot.
The Gallatin National Forest boasts of topography from 5,000 to 10,000 feet with seven National Recreation Trails. The forest is home to some 300 wildlife species from grizzly bear, bald eagles and elk to mountain lions, bobcats and falcons. More than 2,290 miles of trails ranging from easy to very strenuous make the forest a must for hikers and mountain bikers. The terrain varies from dense timber to open meadows with rock outcroppings, waterfalls, lakes, streams and mountain peaks. Trailheads lead from Big Sky into the Spanish Peaks. Try Beehive Basin, an easy to moderate 4.5-mile trail in the Spanish Peaks Primitive area, or the six-mile Tepee Creek Trail. Beginners might prefer the Bacon Rind Creek Trail inside Yellowstone, 4.2 miles rated flat and easy. Big Sky offers plenty of places to set up camp.Visitors will find everything from campgrounds in the Gallatin Canyon to luxury hotels. The Forest Service has 24 rustic log cabins for rent and several guest ranches and motels accommodate guests. More than 25 restaurants, bars and eateries give vacationers plenty of dining choices, and over 40 stores serve shopper's needs. The mighty Gallatin River courses 100 miles through the Gallatin Canyon offering whitewater rafting and blue ribbon trout fishing. Dedicated fishers and rafters can rely on one of the many outfitters in the area.
