Any Westerner knows that the perfect getaway includes a rodeo in some way and when you plan it with a short residence at a dude ranch as a Dude Ranch Association member, well…It just doesn’t get any better than this. Rodeos with such humble beginnings have transformed into one of the American Cowboy or cowgirl’s favorite pastimes, not to mention a fun spectator sport. It all got started in Cody, Wyoming over a century ago, when a bunch of cow folk got together to compete at what they love doing the best…Roping, riding, wrestling and racing events based on real ranch work. This “frontier celebration” is one that has gained much popularity over the years among anyone who wants to experience what the West is really like.
The West still depends on these eager performers’ skills as ranchers to keep the farm in order. And what better way to practice than as a rodeo performer? The rodeo circuit has grown to produce national rodeo competitions, and many of the competitors combine both careers. As a DRA guest, your experience with the rodeo will most likely be a local event, which allows the spectator a closer glimpse of the real West from within a comfortable safe zone. At the end of the week, some DRA members hold their own rodeos allowing the ranch hands and guests to experience the true spirit of the West.
By establishing and enforcing high standards for its members, the Dude Ranchers’ Association has been providing quality Western-style vacations since 1926. The Association now has 100-plus member ranches in 12 Western states and 2 Canadian provinces, a long way from their original 35 ranches in just the Yellowstone region. But, don’t let their size fool you. They are still as dedicated to providing the same quality Ranch experiences and preserving the natural resources and beauty that drew their first member.
Dude ranch vacations aren’t just horses and cowboys, it has a lot of other unique things to offer too. Like, the perfect fishing trip, for example. The business world hasn’t passed the dude ranch experience over either. The Wild West has been recognized for effective team building, creative thinking, inspirational bonding and adventure that you just can’t find in a company conference room. Many dude ranches offer several options to business related stays: industry-leading team-building exercises set up with a state-of-the-art multimedia system, Old West surroundings and of course, ropin’ and ridin’.
While most dude ranches will cater to these strategic business meetings any time of the year, it’s probably a good idea to hold off until their busy season is over. That way, you and your colleagues can enjoy the special focus and attention to detail for the a more productive environment. A lot can be said for the refreshing and enlivening setting that a dude ranch has to offer stimulating stronger work relationships, creative and positive thinking, not to mention all the fun you’ll have. No matter who you are, there’s a little Cowboy in us all.
