The Best Cities of Oklahoma to Vacation in

Just as soon as you cross our state line, you realize the roads are better cared for.  The cities and towns of Oklahoma are better cared for too.  The streets are a little wider, signs are up to direct traffic, the freeways actually work and hometown pride is evident everywhere.  Oklahoma schools received the highest grades in the nation from Education Week in 1998.  My plan is to introduce you to some of the people of our Oklahoma Cities so you'll get a taste of what Oklahoma is all about.  Just click on the region of your choice to begin.  Thank you.  Be sure to check out our Festivals Site for news of special events in each area.

Great Plains Country

Altus is located in the heart of Oklahoma's Great Plains Country and is the county seat of Jackson County.

Clinton's largest attraction, the official Oklahoma Route 66 Museum built in 1993, draws tens of thousands of visitors to Clinton from all over the world. Here you'll hear historian Michael Wallis narrate a decade-by-decade journey through the rise and fall of America's Main Street. And you can see the World's Largest Curio Cabinet fill with the kind of souvenirs Route 66 travelers have been collecting since the 1920s.

Scenic Cordell, Oklahoma was founded in 1892 as a result of the opening of lands made available from the Cheyenne-Arapaho land run of the same year. Framed by the historic County Courthouse, Cordell has one of the few virtually intact town squares in Oklahoma. In addition, Washita County has developed a nationwide reputation for its productive agricultural land and beautiful prairie. The recreational ponds and lakes that sprinkle this landscape can be bountiful for fishermen and water enthusiasts alike.

read the book Journey into the Tall Grass by Annick Smith and Harvey Payne (photographer)  A magnificient photo essay book of the world's largest protected preserve, near Pawhuska.  The shots are exquisite.  The reintroduction of buffalo is recorded too.  The book will appeal to nature lovers and photographers everywhere.

The City of Arapaho Police Page brings us this information:  "Arapaho is located about 90 miles west of Oklahoma City on Interstate 40, then 4 miles north of Clinton, Oklahoma. Chief Brownfield has been here for just over 2 years. Arapaho is a town of about 1,000 people, and is the county seat for Custer County.

Oklahoma Showcase emblem of special value Medicine Park is known as Oklahoma's Cobblestone Community because many of the homes and buildings in Medicine Park are constructed of cobblestones. Cobblestones are naturally made, round rocks of granite and sandstone, and are found in only 3 locations in the world!  The pictures are exceptionally nice, and the story of this area is well told.

McAlester in Pittsburg County between the shores of Lake Eufaula and the foothills of the Pine and Jackfork Mountains, McAlester is one of Oklahoma's oldest communities.  McAlester hosts the state's Oklahoma Prison Rodeo.   The city began as a trading post founded by J. J. McAlester in 1870 in the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory. Today, McAlester is the economic hub of the entire southeast corner of the state.  The Italian Festival draws in thousands.

Just east of McAlester there is a small town name of Krebs where you can find some of the best Italian food in the state. For a very reasonable price they promise you won't go away hungry.   First they cover a huge platter with pasta, and you go from there, filling yourself to the bursting point.  More than 2,000 Italian miners settled in Oklahoma's "Little Italy."  The rich heritage of the Italian people who settled here lives on through these fine restaurants and McAlester's Italian Festival at the Pittsburg County Fairgrounds has huge attendance each Memorial Day weekend.  The spicy bouquet of authentic Italian cooking wafting from the kitchen at Pete's Place has been luring travelers through the blackjack covered hills of southeast Oklahoma since 1925.  Roseanna's Italian Food is branching out into mail order.

Aline Oklahoma is in the southwestern part of Alfalfa County in northwest Oklahoma. Aline was established as a post office two miles south of the present town, April 27, 1894, named for the postmaster's daughter, Aline Hartshorn. When the railroads came, the town moved to the present site. Aline is situated in the valley of the Eagle Chief Creek, a tributary of the Cimarron River.  "We don't raise hell, we raise wheat," kind of describes their winning attitude.
