Quick Facts: Found in southwestern Oklahoma, just above and also east of Texas, Great Plains is short grass country. Real Buffalo have a 60,000 acre preserve here. Fort Sill was built in 1874, mostly to hold Indians prisoner. Geronimo got lost here. Twice. Today the fort is famous for training the best artillery troops in the world. The Wichita Mountains offer rugged hiking, biking, camping and backpacking. Colors in the mountains are well worth the trip. Anadarko is known as the Indian Capital of Oklahoma. Scenic Cordell, Oklahoma was founded in 1892 as a result of the opening of lands made available from the Cheyenne-Arapaho land run of the same year. Framed by the historic County Courthouse, Cordell has one of the few virtually intact town squares in Oklahoma. In addition, Washita County has developed a nationwide reputation for its productive agricultural land and beautiful prairie. The recreational ponds and lakes that sprinkle this landscape can be bountiful for fishermen and water enthusiasts alike.
