This is the very mouth of Robbers Cave. As you will notice at the roof of the cave the tree began to rub against the rocks as the wind blew. Consequently, the tree was injured and began taking steps to heal its breech. This produced a rough protuberance. Incidentally, there is only one way in or out of the cave.
On the Navajo Indian Reservation trees take
hundreds of years to grow tall,
supposedly because the earth is so tough and the
wind so rough. However,
when I took this same picture three years ago there
wasn't a thing in my way.
This year I had to move way off to one side and shoot
down to get this picture
because another pine tree had sprung up from the solid
rock and hurried to
grow into my way.
That leads me to believe Tony Hillerman
didn't
know a good state when he lived here.
